Overview

Salarjung Museum located on the southern bank of Musi river in Hyderabad, this museum is known to be the largest one-man collection in the world and serves as a paradise for the connoisseurs of arts.The present museum building was constructed on the southern bank of River Musi, which is in close proximity to the important monuments of old city of Hyderabad like the historic Charminar, Mecca Masjid etc. the largest one-man collection of antiques in the world  one of the largest antique collections of the world. The assortments belong to Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, well known as Salar Jung III. The Salarjung Museum has 38 galleries spread in 3 blocks with exhibits from varied civilisations going back to the 2nd century. These include different cultures such as Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, Greek and Roman of various countries.
 
The collections of the Salarjung Museum can be divided into Indian Art, Middle Eastern Art, Far Eastern Art, European Art and Children Art section. Also, there is a gallery known as the Founder’s Gallery, which is devoted to the renowned Salarjung family.The collections of the Museum and the library were transferred from Dewan Deodi to the new building in the year 1968, and two more buildings were added in the year 2000.
Established in the year 1951 at the resident palace of Salar Jung III, the museum was inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. The Government of India took over the museum in 1958 and in 1961, the museum was declared to be of National Importance. Finally in the year 1968, the museum was shifted to its present location at Afzalgunj. The museum now has 38 galleries with three sections including the central block, the eastern block and the western block. It houses a wide collection of antiques with around 43,000 art objects, 47,000 books and 9,000 manuscripts from different parts of the world. Some of the artefacts are even centuries old.
