Overview

Golghar located to the west of the Gandhi Maidan in Patna. A Very Famous Monument in Patna, Bihar. It is a granary built by Captain John Garstin, in 1786. The monument is spherical in shape, which gives it the name ‘Golghar’, meaning ‘Round House’. The British army built this massive peculiar shaped granary in 1786, to serve as a storehouse during the times of famines. One can enjoy witnessing the more than 300-years old historical monument, experience the thrill of ascending and descending on the winding staircase and seeing the wonderful view of the Ganges and the City from the top.
 
 After the vicious famine of 1770, which killed nearly 10 million people in the region, Warren Hastings, the then Governor-General of India, ordered the construction of this dome-shaped structure for the purpose of storing grains for the British. However, it was Captain John Garstin, an engineer in the British East India Company who got it constructed.  It has a storage capacity of about 140000 tonnes of grains which is a really big mass. From this stat you can surely imagine the size of this piece  The construction of Golghar was completed on July 20, 1786. At time of its construction, Golghar was the tallest building in Patna. 
 
A beautification drive of the structure was set in 2002.Built in the native Stupa architecture, the building has a foundation of 125m, and a height of 29 m. It is pillarless with a wall of thickness of 3.6 m at the base. One can climb atop the Golghar through the 145 steps of its spiral stairway around the monument. The spiral staircase was designed so as to facilitate the passage of the coolies, who had to carry grain-bags up one flight, deliver their load through a hole at the top, and descend the other stairs. The top of the Golghar presents a wonderful panoramic view of the city and the Ganga flowing nearby. At time of its construction, it was the tallest building in Patna.
 
Best time to visit:  October to February. Evenings are an ideal time to visit.
