Lodi Gardens

Overview

Lodhi garden is located  at 3 kilometers away from Humayun's Tomb. It is one of the historical gardens in Delhi.
It was built in 1444 by Ala-ud-din Alam Shah as a tribute to Mohammed Shah.

The old Lady Willington Park, now known as Lodhi Garden, is dotted with monuments of Sayyid and Lodhi Periods, which include tombs mosques, and bridges. The tombs of Muhammad Shah and Sikandar Lodhi are the good examples of octagonal tombs. Shish and Bara Gumbad are square tombs with imposing dome, turrets on corners and facades giving false impression of being double storeyed.
In the middle of the gardens is the Bara Gumbad , it consists of a large rubble-construct dome, it is not a tomb but a gateway to an attached a three domed masjid, both built in 1494 during the reign of Sikander Lodi, there is also a residence surrounding a central courtyard, where the remains of a water tank can be seen. Opposite the Bara Gumbad is the Shisha Gumbad for the glazed tiles used in its construction, which contains the remains of an unknown family, this was also built during the reign of Sikander Lodi.

A favourite picnic spot and a joy for morning walkers with lots of greenery and trees.
