Overview

Salim Ali Bird sanctuary is located on an island in the Mandovi River about 4kms from Panaji, the capital city of Goa.1.8 Sq Km in area. A variety of local and migratory birds can be found on this island.The sanctuary is within walking distance from the ferry wharf at Chorao.
 
The sanctuary has been named after the famed ornithologist of India Dr. Salim Ali who is also known to have visited the sanctuary before it was declared protected area.Open throughout the year, the sanctuary can be visited with the permission of the Chief Wild Life Warden, Forest Department, Junta House, Panaji. Come winter and this place plays home to several migratory species of birds, like pintail ducks in large numbers in the winter months from October to February every year. The rich mangrove habitat harbours Pintails, Blue-winged teals, maddar ducks, purple herons, Adjutant storcks, flying foxes, crocodiles etc. Take the ferry from Ribandar which is 5 km from Panaji to chorao island.
 
The sanctuary is rich in flora growth and one can see a thick covering of mangrove vegetation here. The flora cover is very fertile over here the mangrove ecology is considered to be the best for birds, fish and insects to multiply. They provide thick shelter for the birds and are their natural abodes.
 
A three-storeyed watch tower located right  inside the sanctuary provides a panaromic view of the sanctuary - below canopy level, at canopy level and above canopy level of the dense vegetation.

The Forest Department operates regular boating excursions in to the sanctuary. A 12-seater boat departs every morning at 7 a.m. from Chorao and takes the visitor to the watch tower. 
 
The boat service is available only from October to May.

How to Reach,
Roadway: From Panaji, one can take a cab, auto or bus till the Ribandar ferry dock and take a ferry across the Mandovi River to the island.
