Hidimba Devi Temple

Devi (Amman) Temple

Overview

Hidimba Devi Temple is located in Man?li, a hill station in the State of Him?chal Pradesh in north India. It is an ancient cave temple dedicated to Hidimbi Devi,It is an old wooden temple of four store, located in the middle of dense forest known as Van Vihar. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Hadimba and was erected in 1553.

Hadimba has been idealized and worshipped in this particular area in Mahabharat. Few of the sub mountainous tracts of the Himalayas were ruled by Hadimb Rakshah. Hadimba was his sister.Thereafter, Hidimba married Bhima and gave birth to their son Ghatotkacha.

Raja Bahadur Singh Built hadimba temple in Manali and there is a fair being held every year known as Bahadur Singh Re Jatar among kullu manali local peoples. Birthday of Hadimba devi fair is also held on 14th May every year with music and dance. In their move about without a definite purpose the Pandavas and their mother, came to the territory of Hadimb Rakshash after escaping from wax house. Bhima fell in love with Haimba and wanted to marry her but the condition was that he could marry her only after killing the brother. Both lived in the area for about one year and then he joined his brother and mother. On the other side Hadimba gave birth to a son 'Ghototkachh'. , Hadimba looked after her country till the time ghototkach was a child. She withdran to the hills for meditation at Dhungri Van Vihar etc.. Thereafter a Temple was raised and She became Hadimba Devi. She was having supernatural powers and was kind to her people.

The Hidimba Devi Temple has intricately carved wooden doors and a 24 meters tall wooden "shikhar" or tower above the sanctuary. The tower consists of three square roofs covered with timber tiles and a fourth brass cone-shaped roof at the top. The earth goddess Durga forms the theme of the main door carvings.[3] The temple base is made out of whitewashed, mud-covered stonework. An enormous rock occupies the inside of the temple, only a 7.5 cm (3 inch) tall brass image representing goddess Hidimba Devi. A rope hangs down in front of the rock, and according to a legend,in bygone days religious zealots would tie the hands of "sinners" by the rope and then swing them against the rock.

About seventy metres away from the temple, there is a shrine dedicated to Goddess Hidimba's son, Ghatotkacha, who was born after she married Bhima. The most surprising feature of the temple or what believers could call the most reassuring feature of the temple is the fact that inside the temple the imprint of the feet of the Goddess carved on a block of stone are worshipped and, when zooming into the area where the temple is located via Google Satellite, the imprint of a giant foot spanning across the valley in the area near the temple can be seen.

The temple is also known for a fair held every year in Hindi month of Sravan in the memory of Raja Bahadur Singh, who built the temple. The fair is popularly known as Bahadur Singh Re Jatar among locals. There is another fair too which is held on 14th May each year in the celebration of birthday of Hadimba Devi. Women around and from Dhungri forest come and celebrates this fair with music and dance. There are benches around the temple premises where you can relax and enjoy peaceful moments.
