Overview

Avantipora is located 28 km south east of Srinagar in Pulwama district overlooking the Jhelum river. The foundation of the town is ascribed to Avantivarman (AD 855 – 883 AD), the first king of the Utpala dynasty.
 
At the same Avantipora Avantivarman erected two magnificent temples, one dedicated to Vishnu The Lord calls Avantisvamin and the other to the Lord Siva called Avantisvara, The former built before its succession to the throne and the last acquisition of sovereignty. During the medieval period, these temples witnessed massive destruction and were reduced to ruins.
 
The first part of the twentieth century witnessed large-scale operation by D.R. Sahni who presented all the Quadrangle of the temple to the ground of the courtyard and claimed the extant basement of the central sanctuary and the remains of the subsidiary of shrines. The excavation was discovered a rich harvest of antiques includes 121 coins issued by Toramana, Sultans of the Shah Miri, the dynasty Durrani rulers Afghans etc. Sahni also excavated The Quadrangle of the Avantisvara temple and brought to light a small jar of mud with 108 copper coins issued by various rulers, fragments of birch contains accounts of articles of worship, inscribed jar of clay...
 
The original design of the complex consists of a temple erected in the central part of a spacious rectangular courtyard, four small shrines in the four corners of the central altar, one roofed with peristyle from an array of cells ranged around the periphery of the paved courtyard, and an imposing gateway. In front of the stairs of the central sanctuary was a kind of Mandapa temple pillared with open sides, containing within perhaps garudadvaja. The temple is actually distributed with carvings lush and refined, elegant sculptures that is a masterful Symphony of architecture and art.
