Overview

Rajarajeshwari temple is located at Polali in Kariyangala Village of Bantwal Taluk in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka. This temple is in the town of Polali on the banks of River Phalguni. River phalguni flows from east on the northern side a furlong way from the temple. It turns left towards south at the back of the temple in the western side. The temple is believed to have been built in 8th century AD. Polali is an important seat of Shakti worship.
 
Legend states that King Suratha constructed this temple. After the construction of the temple, King Suratha installed the image of Goddess Rajarajeshwari and placed his own crown on the head of the deity. These shows that the temple was made of molten brass, with four platforms or ascents and on the highest of them was an image of the size of a man made of gold with eyes composed of two red rubies. The idol of Rajarajeshwari is a huge stucco image of a height of about ten feet. There are several other smaller stucco-images of Bhadrakali, Subramanya, etc. The ceiling in the Mukhamantapa, which is of wood, is covered with excellent carvings of gods and goddesses. The roofs of the mukhamantapa and the garbhagriha as also the dhwajastambha and the pillar of lights are covered with copper plates. The roof of the temple are adorned with beautiful wooden carvings which houses many gods and goddesses.  Other deities, who adorn the sanctum sanctorum, include Lord Mahaganapathi, Lord Subrahmanya, Goddess Bhadrakali and Goddess Saraswathi. Shri Rajarajeshwari Temple has been glorified in many ancient epics like Markandeya Purana, Ashoka Purana etc.
 
 Annual festival of March, Shivaratri, Gokulashtami, Navrathri, Deepavali, Sashti and Dhanur Mahotsavam are celebrated with immense fervour at the temple. The annual car festive, which lasts for a month, attracts a large number of people.
 
Temple Timing :  Morning pooja is conducted at 8.30 am, the noon Mahapooja, is conducted at 12.30 pm and the night pooja, conducted at 8.30 pm.
 
How to Reach,
Road way: The Shri Raja Rajeshwari Temple at Polali lies 19 kilometres from Mangalore. A transit route can be taken by boarding a bus from Mangalore to Kaikamba. At Kaikamba the person needs to take another bus which stops at Polali.
