Overview

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race isone of the most significant and colourful boat races in Kerala. A popular Vallam Kali held in the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha.  Vallam Kali or Vallamkali literally means boat game,The Nehru Trophy Boat Race named was later christened, 'Nehru Trophy'. The first race was an ‘impromptu’ one held in honour of Panditji. On that occasion Ten Snake boats were present and Nedubhagam Chundan won the race. In 1953 the boat race was not conducted. In order to commemorate the occasion every year "Nehru Trophy Boat Race" is conducted in all splendor by the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society.  after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is conducted on the second Saturday of August every year. On the day of this fiercely fought boat race,the tranquil lake front is transformed into a sea of humanity with an estimated two lakh people, including tourists from abroad for watching it. For the people of each village in Kuttanad, a victory at this race for their village boat is something to be celebrated for months to come.
 
The 100–120 foot long canoes made of a wood locally called "Aanjili thadi" carrying 90- 110 rowers which moves like a snake through the channels (hence the name), is an eye catching sight for any tourist. The Chundan Vallam also has the record as "the biggest water vessel used for sports purpose" .
