Taliparamba is one among 108 Shiva Temples in Kerala created by Lord Parasurama. Among these temples 12 are considered as most important and called Dwadasa Shivalayas. They are Gokarnam Mahabaleswara Temple. Taliparamba Rajarajeswara Temple, Kottiyoor Perumal Temple, Thrissur Vadakkunnatha Temple, Peruvanam Mahadeva Temple, Kodungalloor Thiruvanchikkulam Mahadeva Temple, Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple, Kaduthuruthy Mahadeva Temple, Chengannur Mahadeva Temple, Kandiyoor Mahadeva Temple and Suchindram Sthanumalaya Perumal Temple ect.

The Shiva Linga here is believed to be several thousands of years old. Legend has it that Shiva gave three sacred Shiva Lingas to Parvati/Sati for worship. One sage, After his death the Linga disappeared into the earth. Then his son Muchukunda offered similar prayers to Shiva and got a second Shiva Linga, which too disappeared in course of time. Centuries passed. The third Shiva Linga was handed down to Satasoman, a king of Mushaka/Kolathiri/Chirakkal .

The head of Sati is said to have fallen at the place where Taliparamba temple is situated and her yoni, reproductive organ, at Chongannur. The sanctity of Taliparamba is attributed to this. It is also believed that after eight in the evening, Lord Shiva is present in the temple along with Goddess Parvathy and that during this time, they will grant the wishes of women devotees. Hence, women are allowed to enter the temple only after eight pm.

Once sage Maandhata propitiated Lord Siva with intense prayers. Siva was so pleased that he presented one of the Sivalingas to him with the injunction that it should be installed only at a place where there was no cremation ground. The sage, after searching all over, found Taliparamba the most sacred spot where he installed the linga.

Mahasivratri and Vishu are the two main annual festivals here. The 21 days annual festival starts in the first week of March every year.

The prayer culminates with the prasadam or the pushpanjali, a leaf with a smear of turmeric and Tulsi leaf which I carefully tuck in my bag and and head back towards my home stay. So much for the blessings... time to call it a day.
