Vanabadrakaliamman Temple

Devi (Amman) Temple

Vanabadrakaliamman temple has goddess Kali as its deity. This temple is located near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district.Goddess Vanabadrakali Amman is a swayambumurthi. The temple stands majestically on the river banks of Bhavani originating in the nilgiris. It can be reached by buses and other vehicles from Mettupalayam by traveling mere 5 km.
Goddess Vanabadrakali Amman is a swayambumurthi.  Realizing their wishes, women use to put their mangal sutras in the hundi.  They tie a stone in the sacred tree for child boon.  Those starting a trade or beginning marriage proposals use to place white and red flowers in separate packets and seek the permission of the Goddess. If they get the flower of their choice, it means the permission is granted. Above all, the temple is known for the sheep animal sacrifice.
Vanabadrakali Amman worship and the temple came into being in this place millenniums back, it is believed.  It is also believed that Mother Shakti came to this jungle place-Vana for penance on Lord Shiva to kill demon Mahishasura.  As She performed penance in Vana the forest, She is praised as Vanabadrakali.  It is also believed that the temple is associated with the story of Aravalli-Suravalli the deities of witchcrafts.  Bheema, one of the Pandava brothers came here to end their evil doings, captivated by them and rescued by Lord Krishna.  It is said that one Allimuthu was deputed by Lord Krishna to banish the evil sisters.  Allimuthu went on his mission after praying to Goddess Vanabadrakali. Aravalli and Suravalli were shocked and trembled to see the roaring actions of Allimuthu, they surrendered and offered their sister to Allimuthu in marriage and killed him by food poisoning.  Abhimanyu, son of Arjuna went to the upper world and brought back Allimuthu alive back to earth.  He was now doubly strong, prayed to Vanabadrakali and floored the kingdom and evil rule of Aravalli, Suravalli, thus goes the story.
It is believed that once a demon named Pagasuran lived here near this temple premise. He used to trouble the people living here. To defeat this asura, one of the Pancha pandavas called Bheema worshipped Kali in order to destroy Pagasuran. Here both the idols of Pagasuran and Bheema are worshipped by devotees. Asuran is worshipped as Kaval Bootham.
