Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary

Scenic Spot

Overview

Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary (SWS) is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. It is a 1,411 sq km protected reserve and a remarkable wildlife corridor between the Western and Eastern Ghats in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Sathyamangalam forests are rich sandalwood reserves, making the sanctuary a unique and ideal setting to visit. The thumb rule for any and all encounters for animals in the wild would be see the animals before they see you, hear the animals before they hear you. In this case, no other adage could be more fitting. If you follow this, you have the most potential for wildlife viewing.

The Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary, home to 28 tigers . The highest density of tigers in India - is currently contesting to be named Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve. The large population of sambhar, spotted deer and gaur is the main reason for the high density of the striped wild cat as the former makes for perfect prey base. At SWS you are closer to catching a glimpse of the striped hyena, as it is one of the last few places where they exist. Another rare species you can spot is the four-horned antelope. SWS has an excellent population of blackbuck. What is intriguing about this particular animal in Sathyamangalam is that, it is the only landscape in the country where the blackbuck and tiger co-exist; to observe the two together is an opportunity that is one in a million.
