History

Valmiki, author of the famous Ramayana epic, wishes to have the marriage darshan of Lord Sri Rama. He came to this place and performed penance to achieve his aim. Lord Rama appeared before the sage that he wanted with Mother Sita and brothers Sri Lakshmana, Sri Satrugna Bharatha and Sri. The sage has wished the Lord to stay in the place provided for the benefit of all the devotees and Lord was happy to oblige. The wise man is in another temple at the foot of the hill. As it is in a place surrounded by water (NMETI in Tamil), he was hailed as Nmeti Vanna Perumal and place Tiru Nmeti Malai meaning mount surrounded by water. The sage Swayambhu Vâlmîki as a is displayed in a form of worship in the sanctuary.

Saint Tirumangai Azhwar came to this place for Perumals darshan. He could not see Perumal as the mont was surrounded by water. Azhwar has decided to wait and have the darshan of the Lord and stayed in the opposite hill. If days moved, water level has not declined. It is unwavering in its determination and has waited until the water level had dropped, had the darshan.

Pleased with his devotee, Perumal granted four Azhawar darshans of Neer Vanna Perumal standing, Narasimha sitting, Ulagalanda reclining Ranganatha Perumal and in walking postures. The devotee can take advantage of these darshans in the temple. Lord Neervanna Perumal is at the foot of the hills while Ulgalanda Ranganatha, Narasimha and Peruamal are on the hill of the temple.

Although Lord Narasimha is known for his furious appearance, he smiles and cool here. After having killed Hiranya to save his son Prahlada pious of his torture, he was still furious. Boy Prahlada was very afraid of Lords Fury. To make his devotee happy, Lord Narasimha spread his wrath and appeared as boy Prahlada smile itself. It is therefore become Bala Narasimha.
