Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park

 

Overview

The Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary is situated in the Nilgiri Hills, to a point where the Western Ghats respond to the Eastern Ghats. This sanctuary has a mix of flat terrain, undulating parkland, open grassland, marshes, valleys and nullahs. The Mayyar river forms a series of spectacular waterfalls on its 65 kms road on highway Udhagamandalam-Mysore . This sanctuary can be reached from Mysore too.

 
The 321 sq km area of the sanctuary encompasses a National Park measuring 103 sq km).  The vegetation here is varied. The hilly terrain of the Western Ghats, clothed in dense mixed and moist deciduous forests, Mudumalai make a more attractive wildlife reserve.
The Mysore-Ooty highway crosses the park, following the course of the Mayyar river, which separates Mudumalai Bandipur sanctuary.
 
Mudumalai while the western half receives the southwest monsoon, the leaflets eastern receive the relatively more soft to the north-east monsoon which leads to a diversity of vegetation types and the typical migration of herbivores.
 
 
The fauna
 
Includes Elephant, Gaur, Bonnet, Macaque, Common langur, Tigers and Leopards, Chital, Panther, Sloth Bear, Python, Barking deer, Four-Horned Antelope, Otter, Crocodile, Giant flying squirrel, Sambhar, Hyena, Wild Dog, Wild Boar, Mouse Deer, Spotted Deer, Jackal, Hare, Porcupine and Mongoose.
 
Season
 
climate is generally clay throughout the year. This is the cooler between November and February and warm between March and May. Temperature ranges from 15oc-35oC
 
The best time to visit
 
is February to May and from September to October. The clear days from late January to early April are rewarding for the nature lovers.
