The Queen of Hill Stations. At the height of 2,600m stands Udhagamandalam.Metupalayam is located mid way between Ooty and Coimbatore, that is about 45 km  from Coimbatore. The ‘Nilgiris toy train’ connect Ooty to mettupalayam, at the foot of the Nilgiris.
The train, for obvious safety reasons, averages 10.4 km per hour and is perhaps the slowest in India.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway track is 1,000 mm  and the railway is isolated from other metre gauge lines.
Between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, the line uses the Abt rack and pinion system to climb the steep gradient. Signals the beginning of the process to phase out the coal-fired vintage Swiss engines that took scores of passengers on the rack and pinion track to Coonoor and Udhagamandalam, covering 41.8 kilometres , 108 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges.
On this rack section trains are operated by 'X' Class steam rack locomotives manufactured by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works of Winterthur in Switzerland. These steam locomotives can be used on any part of the l,but the newer diesel locomotives can operate on the entire section. tain Railway takes tourists from Mettupalayam to Ootacamund or Ooty. This is a truly amazing journey that takes tourists from a height of 1069 feet to 7228 feet. The history of the train can be traced back to the times when it was very difficult to reach Udhagamandalam - as Ooty was called in those days. Travellers needed to ride on a horse back or carried on 'dollies' through a forested path to reach Ooty. It was this access difficulty that gave birth to an idea of constructing a rail line to connect the hilly areas of Coonoor and Ooty from plains.
