Overview

Sivapuram is located 5 kilometres south-east of the town and taluk headquarters of Kumbakonam on the way to Thiruvarur. The Lord is a swayambumurthy. Thuis ancient temple is said to be around 200 years old and was built by the Cholas. The five tiered gopuram is facing East. Enter the temple there is a shrine for Kalabhairavar facing North and to you right. Suryan and Chandran have also worshipped at the timple. This is one of the temples noted for Angapradakshinam
 
The place is also known as Kuberapuram, Bhoo Kailas and Shanbagaranyam. Lord Vishnu as Swedhavaraha  worshipped here. Also Kubera, Ravana and Agni the God of Fire worshipped here. The temple is also noted for the Angapradakshinam undertaking by the devotees.
 
Nardana Vinayaka, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodhbava, Brahmma and Durga grace from their respective shrines in the corridor. A painting depicting the worship of Lord Vishnu of Shiva with lotus flowers is on the nearby wall. On the outer wall are the shrines for Vinayaka, Subramania and Gajalakshmi.Saint Tirunavukkarasar in Thevaram hymns mentions the event of Lord Vishnu in white swine form worshipping Lord Shiva in this temple in the song beginning with the lines "Paaravankan"
 
Sivapuram is famous for the Sivagurunathaswamy temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.The temple is one of the 67 sthalams or holy abodes mentioned in the Thevaram located in the ancient Chola kingdom. The deity is also referred to as Sivagurunathar or Sivapuranathar. According to different legends, Vishnu, Brahma and Kubera had worshipped Shiva here at different times.As Kubera is believed to have worshipped here, the village is also known as Kuberapuri.
 
The present temple in the village dates back to the Later Chola period and covers an area of 1.3 acres (5,300 m2).The principal shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva who is worshipped by a sculpted figurine of Vishnu in his Varaha Avatar.There are also shrines dedicated to Subrahmanya, Gajalakshmi and Bhairava.
 
It is also believed that a shivalingam lies buried at this spot. This shivalingam was worshipped by the Saivite saint Tirugnanasambandar.
 
The  temple occupies an area of about 1.3 acres and has a 5 tiered Rajagopuram. The internal prakaram has a 3 tiered Gopura entrance; there are shrines to Subramanya and Gajalakshmi and others. There is also a sculptured image of the stalapuranam depicting Varahamurthy worshipping Shiva with flowers. The Bhairava shrine is considered to be of significance here; two worship services are offered to Bhairavar.
