Overview

Because of the heavy crowd of wise men to Mount Kailash attending the wedding of Lord Shiva with mother Parvathy, the Earth has lost its balance. Lord Shiva called Sage Agasthya to go to Pothigai Hills in the south and of the balance at the level of the Earth as its only weight was sufficient for the purpose meaning the weight of millions of rishis at Mount Kailash then.

 
The first day of the month Chithirai (falling almost on 14 April each year), Lord granted the marriage Darshan at the Sage Agasthya. Lord Papanasanatha adorned the marriage Darshan behind the sanctum sanctorum as Kalyanasundarar on his bullock vehicle. Sage Agasthya and his wife Lopamudra are in the sanctuary worship the Lord.

Festival
 
10 day Brahmmotsavam in Chithirai and marriage Agasthya festival the first day of the same month (April-May) and Thaipoosam in January and February are the famous festivals in the temple.
 
Grandeur of the Temple:
 
Indira, the king of devas had Dwashta, son of Sukracharya (Venus planet- the guru of the demons)) as his guru. Indira has come to know that Dwashta was performing a Yagna for the demons and killed and thus incurred the sin called Brahmmahati dosha. In order to cleanse itself of sin, Indira wandered among the various Shiva Kshetras worshipping the Lord for the relief of the dosha. Guru, planet Jupiter advised her to go this place and worship Lord Shiva. Same as Indira has been entered the borders of this place, it is discharge of his sin. Consequently, the place came to be known as Papanasam - meaning destroying sins and the Lord as Papanasanathar.
 
Land of Sun: sage Romasa sought the advice of his guru Agasthya to choose places on the shores of Tambiraparani for installation Shivalingas. The professor said the disciple of discard of flowers used for Shiva Puja on the river, and do the installations or the flowers reached the shores. Romasa threw lotus flowers as advised on the river, of which nine have reached the bank in various places and Papanasam was the first. Planets are nine, therefore, they have been appointed Nava (nine) Kailash each assigned to a planet. Sun is the first of the planets, Papanasam is attached to Sun known under the name of Surya Kailash.
 
Mukkila Lingam: Lord Papanasa natha graces of Rudraksha beads in the sanctum sanctorum and also under the tree Mukkila in the corridor-prakara. It is said that three Vedas - Rig, Yajur and Sama - were the Kila trees offering shade to the Lord and Atharvana Veda has the space. They bowed down to the Lord in these forms. Therefore, the Lord is named Mukkila Lingam.
 
Also, the Tambiraparani river, gushing of Pothigai Hills and circulating in the hilly regions achieve the plains only to Papanasam. During the Uchikala Puaja (pujas during the afternoon), the food (nivedhana) are offered for the fish in Tambiraparani. It is here that the Lord Shiva granted darshan of wise Vyakrapatha Patanjali and standing between the horns of Nandhi on Thaipoosam a day. Recalling this special event, pujas are performed to Nandhi each year on this day with sandal paste.
 
There is a bombardment pierre (Urals in Tamil) at the front of the shrine of mother Ulgammai. The women use of book of the curcuma and make turmeric water for abishek to the mother. They eat a little of this water abishek in hoping that they will soon be married and blessed by a child. The married women think abishek this water consumption would also increase the longevity of their Mangal Sutras.
