Overview

Tapkeshwar Temple is a cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated by the forest side,Located at 6.5Km from Dehradun city. The main shivalinga at the temple is inside a natural cave. This Temple is a significant temple of the capital city and set on the bank of a seasonal river in a damp cave. This river enters the cave temple where the water drips from the ceiling on a Shiv Linga. The Tapkeshwar Temple in Dehradun derives its name 'Tapakeswar' from the natural dripping of the water drops over the shrine from the rocks of the cave. Then the water vanishes underground only to reappear after a few yards in the form of stream. Cool sulphur springs around the temple make it an excellent bathing spot for pilgrims. The small cave with this splendid scenery is said to have been once resided by Dronacharya- the teacher of Pandavas and Kauravas in the Hindu epic Mahabharata written by Ved Vyas. The cave is thus named Drona Cave after his name.
 
The main Entrance of the Tapkeswar Shiv Temple in Dehradun with shops all around from where you can take parshaad. The stairs take you down to the main mandir entrance gate.
 
 The beautiful temple of lord Shiva established in between the two hills attracts hundreds of tourists from and around Dehradun every month.  Travelers from and around Uttarakhand state pay visit to Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple for its religious significance and adventurers go to see the water drops dripping in the Shiva ling in Drona cave. The water that drops down vanishes underground and can be seen only few yards away in the form of a stream. In Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, cool sulphur-water springs where devoted pilgrims take bath before entering the temple.
 
The tranquility surrounds the temple sooths the tiresome voyage and the simple Darshan itself make the devotee spell bound. Legend says that it was from this cave that Lord Shiva poured milk to Ashwathama, the son of Dronacharya. This picture book site is to be visited during the time of Shivaratri, when large gathering throng here to participate the holy matrimony of Shiva with Parvathi.
 
A large festival is held on Shivratri day around the Tapkeshwar Temple in Dehradun. People in large numbers participate in the fair organized on the occasion of Shivratri and pay their obeisance to the deity every year. Drona Cave, surrounded by beautiful hills, is usually covered with picnickers from Dehradun and nearby districts.
