Overview

Yamunotri, the source of Yamuna River and the seat of the Goddess Yamuna. Yamunotri Temple is situated in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,291 metres  in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides and lies in close proximity of the Indio-China border. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and has a black marble idol of the goddess.The actual source of River Yamuna is at a fewer distance from the temple at an altitude of about 4,421 meters (14,505 ft). Besides, two hot springs can also be seen at Yamunotri Dham out of Surya Kund, has boiling water properties where the Gauri Kund has lukewarm water suitable for bathing.
 
Yamunotri temple has a shrine dedicated to the goddess. There is also an 18th-century temple at Gangotri, it was built by Amar Singh Thapa, it was damaged and re-innovated in the 19th century.The temple has been destroyed twice by snow and floods before being rebuilt. It is located on the backdrop of Bandarpunch.[6] The temple is part of the revered Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.
 
There is a beautiful water fall located back of the temple. Further up by one KM the frozen lake on top of Kalind Parvat is the origin of river Yamuna. There are some hot water springs located near the temple. One of them is Surya Kund. Devotees hang rice or potatoes tied by cloth into this water tank and after it gets cooked they are taken as Prasad. Another water tank is Yamuna Bai Kund, where devotees take bath before visiting the temple. This place is located at the western flank of the famous Banderpoonch peak.
 
Yamunotri temple remains close during winter times. The temple opens at the starting week of May month on the religious day of Akshaya-tritya ( based on Hindu calendar ). It closes on Diwali festival day which fall in the month of October. During the closing of the temple in winter the goddess Yamunotri is kept at Karsali village. The pujari or Pandas of this temple are from Kharsali village.

Yamunotri Temple Timing: 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya in the month of May and closes next                                                     day of Diwali in November
 
How to Reach,
 
Road Way: The best route to visit Yamunotri is via Dehardun and Barkot. Just in case you are coming from Haridwar-Rishikesh then the road to Yamunotri diverts from Dharasu bifurcation point. Yamunotri is Well connected to Haridwar , Dehradun , Chamba, Tehri, Barkot, Hanuman Chatti and Janki Chatti. Hanuman Chatti to Phool Chatti is 5 km by jeep, 3 km Phool Chatti to Janki Chatti on foot and 5 km from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri by trek (8 km trek), the roadhead for Yamunotri is connected by bus services of Samyukt Rotation Yatayat Vyavstha Samiti to Rishikesh, Haridwar and other major centres in the region.
