Overview

Gorumara National  park is located in the Malbazar subdivision of Jalpaiguri district, in the state of West Bengal in India. The park is situated in the Terai region of the Himalayan foothil. It is a medium-sized park with grasslands and forests. It is primarily known for its population of Indian rhinoceros. 
 
Gorumara was a reserve forest since 1895. The park was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1949, on account of its breeding population of Indian rhinoceros. It was declared an Indian National Park on January 31, 1994. Originally as small as 7 km2, Gorumara has grown by incorporating neighbouring lands to about 80 km2. The park has been declared as the best among the protected areas in India by the Ministry of Environment and Forest for the year 2009.
 
Much of this forest is moist deciduous and sal is the most common and valuable tree. Teak, Simul, Siris, Khair are also found here. The park is breathtaking with its rivers and mountain ranges. The park is home to mammal species like One horned rhinoceros, Indian Elephant, Indian Bison, leopard, Deer, Sambar, Monkeys etc. The park also provide suitable habitat to bird species Indian pied hornbill, Woodpeckers, Sunbird, fly catcher, Minivet, Drongo, Brahminy duck, Pheasants and many more migratory birds.
 
The best way to watch wildlife at the park is to use powerful binoculars, with night vision facilities at night, from the numerous well-located watchtowers at the park. The watchtowers are:
 
Jatraprasad Watch Tower: Named after a legendary elephant
Rhino Observation Point: Watch tower in front of the Gorumara forest bungalow
Chandrachur Watch Tower (Old Khunia Watch Tower): Near the Murti forest bungalow
 
Gorumara Elephant Safari can be availed only by those staying inside the Forest Department's accommodation at Gorumara Eco Village Kalipur, Gorumara Elephant Camp Dhupjhora and Gorumara Rhino Camp Ramsai
 
Visit to the various Watch Towers as well as the Jungle Safari of the Gorumara Wildlife Sanctuary are regulated by the Forest Department. They are conducted twice during the day in two Shifts.
 
Best time to Visit:  October to May. 
The park remains closed from 15th June to 15th September.

How to Reach,
NH 31 between Siliguri and Guwahati passes over Lataguri, the entrance to the park. Tourist can hire a taxi or use the public bus to reach Lataguri or Ramsai. Buses starts from Siliguri (NJP) every 15 minutes for Mainaguri. It is 90 minutes journey.
